Psalm 89

1I will sing of Yahweh's acts of covenant faithfulness forever. 2For I have said, “Covenant faithfulness has been established forever; 3“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, 4I will establish your descendants forever, Selah 5The heavens praise your wonders, Yahweh; 6For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh? 7He is a God who is greatly honored in the council of the holy ones 8Yahweh God of hosts, 9You rule the raging sea; 10You crushed Rahab as one who is killed. 11The heavens belong to you, and the earth also. 12You created the north and the south. 13You have a mighty arm 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. 15Blessed are the people who worship you! 16They rejoice in your name all day long, 17You are their majestic strength, 18For our shield belongs to Yahweh; 19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones; Many mss have the singular faithful one instead of faithful ones . The MT has I will place help upon a warrior . Some translate the word for help as crown and that is how the ULB has translated the word here. 20I have chosen David my servant; 21My hand will support him; 22No enemy will deceive him; 23I will crush his enemies before him; 24My truth and my covenant faithfulness will be with him; 25I will place his hand over the sea 26He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, 27I also will place him as my firstborn son, 28I will extend my covenant faithfulness to him forever; 29I will make his descendants endure forever 30If his children forsake my law 31if they break my rules 32then will I punish their rebellion with a rod 33But I will not remove my steadfast love from him 34I will not break my covenant 35Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness— 36his descendants will continue forever 37It will be established forever like the moon, Selah 38But you have refused and rejected; 39You have renounced the covenant of your servant. 40You have broken down all his walls. 41All who pass by have robbed him. 42You have raised the right hand of his enemies; 43You turn back the edge of his sword 44You have brought his splendor to an end; 45You have shortened the days of his youth. Selah 46How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself, forever? 47Oh, think about how short my time is, 48Who can live and not die, Selah 49Lord, where are your former acts of covenant faithfulness 50Call to mind, Lord, the mocking directed against your servants 51Your enemies hurl insults, Yahweh;
